Sometimes it's easy to lose track of the fact that you're floating around in a whole lot of nature when you go surfing. Especially around here where the water is crystal clear. "It's like surfing in Evian" as one visitor from the UK once put it.
Though every so often you do get reminded that you're not totally alone out there. A few years back had the good fortune to be in the water as a pod of dolphins swam straight through the line up. One of them stopping directly underneath then turning on it's side so that it could get a better look. There have been sightings of sharks, plenty of large fish (the more the better so that we don't become #1 menu option), and lots of both familiar and odd birds.
Today was a first though as a giant (and I mean almost 1.5m across giant) ray swam through the line up. It looked like a large patch of seaweed until I paddled over and it decided to move. Being low tide and a shoulder high swell it was shallow and so pretty close. Another timely reminder that I am not actually floating in the local Lido.
